What Is Optical Density?
Optical density (OD) is a logarithmic measure of how much a material attenuates light. An OD of 1 means only 10% of light passes through; OD 2 means 1%; OD 3 means 0.1%. This logarithmic scale makes it easy to work with the enormous range of attenuation encountered in optics — from tinted windows (OD ~0.5) to laser safety filters (OD 5+).
Formulas
Where I₀ is incident intensity, I is transmitted intensity, and T is transmission fraction.
OD Reference Table
| OD | Transmission | Attenuation | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.3 | 50% | 2× | ND2 filter (1 stop) |
| 1.0 | 10% | 10× | Sunglasses |
| 2.0 | 1% | 100× | Dark filter |
| 3.0 | 0.1% | 1,000× | Solar viewing filter |
| 5.0 | 0.001% | 100,000× | Laser safety goggles |
| 10 | 10⁻⁸% | 10¹⁰× | Welding filter |
Applications
- Laser safety — goggles are rated by OD at specific laser wavelengths.
- Photography — ND filters specified by OD (ND 0.9 = 3 stops).
- Spectroscopy — absorbance measurements use OD = −log₁₀(T).
- Welding — shade numbers relate to OD for eye protection.
How to Use
- Choose: OD from intensities, transmission from OD, OD from transmission, or attenuation factor.
- Enter known values.

Examples
Sunglasses (OD 1)
T = 10⁻¹ × 100 = 10% — sunglasses block 90% of light
Laser goggles (OD 5)
T = 10⁻⁵ × 100 = 0.001% — only 1 in 100,000 photons passes
FAQ
What does OD mean for laser safety?›
OD (optical density) for laser safety goggles indicates how much laser light is blocked at a specific wavelength. OD 5 means only 0.001% of laser light passes through. ANSI Z136.1 provides guidelines for required OD based on laser power, beam size, and wavelength.
How does OD relate to ND filter stops?›
In photography, each 'stop' halves the light. OD 0.3 ≈ 1 stop, OD 0.6 ≈ 2 stops, OD 0.9 ≈ 3 stops. The formula is: stops = OD / 0.301 (since log₁₀(2) ≈ 0.301).
Can optical density be negative?›
For passive filters, OD is always ≥ 0. A negative OD would imply amplification (more light out than in), which only occurs in active media like laser gain media or optical amplifiers.
What is the difference between OD and absorbance?›
In spectroscopy, absorbance (A) and optical density (OD) use the same formula: A = log₁₀(I₀/I). They are numerically identical. 'Absorbance' is preferred in chemistry/spectroscopy, while 'optical density' is used in filter and laser safety contexts.
